Most of us are aware of the benefits of free stretch Ponte Vedra. However, are you willing to dive deeper to learn more about stretch reflex? In case you’re clueless about it, it’s also called the muscle stretch reflex or your body’s pre-programmed response to a stretch stimulus in your muscle.

How it Works

As soon as a muscle spindle is stretched, a response to contract the muscle is received through an impulse that’s being sent to your spinal cord. The fact that this impulse doesn’t go all the way to your brain because it only goes to your spinal cord and back, makes it a very quick one. In fact, this quick impulse occurs within 1 to 2 milliseconds at best.

The Stretch Reflex Protects Your Muscles

Did you know that the stretch reflex serves as a protective mechanism for your muscles to prevent them from tearing? Since impulses are sent to your spinal cord to contract your muscle every time a muscle spindle is stretched, your stretch reflex protects your muscle from being forcefully pulled beyond its normal range.

What are Examples of the Stretch Reflex?

Since your body is constantly under external push and pull forces (including the force of gravity), it needs to continuously adjust and maintain its posture. Without the stretch reflex to keep your muscles from contracting upon movement, it would be impossible to maintain your posture. Another example would be when your patellar tendon that’s located in your knee is being tapped by a physician via the knee-jerk test. This stimulus will cause a slight stretch in your tendon as well as your quadriceps muscles that will result in a small kicking motion.
